A grand day for village veterans, businesses

East Rockaway hosts rededication, ribbon cuttings, grand openings

On July 9, the Village of East Rockaway, in conjunction with the VFW and the American Legion, held a rededication ceremony for the Veterans Memorial Plaza triangle, located at the juncture of Main Street and Atlantic Avenue in the heart of the village.
“We welcome the VFW, American Legion, the auxiliary and the sons of the legion, and thank them for their service,” said Mayor Bruno Romano in a speech to the crowd. “Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and a lone driver [crashing into the site] took its toll on this plaza.” He said that Adam Frank redesigned the spot, which includes a dedication rock, a clock and floral landscaping. “Our freedom is a result of those who served … think of them whenever you pass this memorial.”

Grand openings

East Rockaway, along with its Chamber of Commerce, also hosted grand openings and ribbon cuttings immediate after the Veterans’ Memorial ceremony.
Their first stop was Po-Boys sandwiches (A Louisiana Kitchen) at 142 Main Street. Next was Greek Xpress, at 59 Main Street; and then Luv Pupps Dog Grooming Service at 6 Davison Plaza.
“The recent grand openings in East Rockaway is another sign of the upturn that we’re undergoing,” said Chamber President Mike Hawksby. “The new Greek Xpress represents what people want — food that is fast, casual and of great quality. Po-Boys sandwiches bring a unique flavor to the community, and a different taste from a region of our country known for its delicious Creole taste; and Luv Pupps dog grooming is off to a great start with great reviews. Another great business to service our furry family members!”
Hawksby said that East Rockaway is undergoing a change in its business community — a positive push towards the wants and needs of the residents. “It’s an exciting time to be involved and to help in any way,” he said. “Mayor Romano and the village board are unanimously pro-business and welcome the growth. Best of luck to all the new businesses, and continued strength to all our existing businesses.”
