A single snowflake in the Baldwin air

’Tisn’t the season for much of anything right now, but the giant holiday-season-style snowflake attached to a light pole on Merrick Road near Grand Avenue is a test to make sure future decorations will work.

The lighted snowflake, on the northwest corner of Merrick Road, was purchased by the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, to light up the community during the holidays.

Because the lights are so expensive – about $600 each, said president Erik Mahler, the chamber was trying to find them when they’re on sale. The chamber was able to find the one hanging up and a few others for $400.

The chamber hoped to hang up the ones that were already purchased before the holiday season, but had to wait for approval from PSEG of Long Island. Insurance concerns also hindered the hanging.

At its last meeting in January, the chamber named Gala Fresh Farms the business of the month.

In other chamber news, a date for the annual Baldwin Day Picnic and Fireworks Show has been set.

This year, the event will be held on Aug. 6. In addition, the chamber said that two businesses have stepped up to sponsor the annual fireworks show.

The Town of Hempstead Federal Credit Union became a platinum sponsor with its donation, while NOVI, a consistent supporter of the Baldwin Day Picnic for many years, became a gold sponsor.
