A tale of politics and scandal

Iolanthe

In an election year that has seen its share of political comedy already, the timing is just right for the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company’s latest production, Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic political satire, “Iolanthe or the Peer and the Peri.” The production features a full cast of performers, scenery and costumes, with the critically acclaimed Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra. Its magical blend of beautiful music, clever lyrics — this is the show that features the renowned “Nightmare Song” — and a daffy story about the son of a fairy and a mortal lawyer who goes into politics will have audiences roaring one moment, feeling sadness the next and tapping their toes throughout. This political lampoon was the pair’s seventh work together as composer and author, and many consider it to be the show with which their famed partnership truly hit its stride.
Friday, June 10, 8 p.m. $25, $20 seniors and students. Jeanne Rimsky Theater, Landmark on Main Street, 232 Main St., Port Washington. For tickets and information, visit www.gilbertandsullivanli.com.

Seasonal Delights

Crossroads Folk Festival
Crossroads Farm, on the grounds of the former Grossman’s Farm in Malverne, is the setting for some summertime sounds with a dynamic slate of local musicians. Award-winning singer-songwriter Tom Chapin headlines the event, a benefit for the farm. Malverne-based songwriter Stuart Markus, who has been involved as an advisor to the event, participates with his popular folk trio Gathering Time. The lineup also includes Mara Levine and Mike Agranoff, and Long Island-based singer-songwriters Mike Barry, Marci Geller and Kirsten Maxwell, along with a showcase of up-and-coming musicians on the folk scene. Amateur and professional musicians with a desire to play, sing or just listen can drop by the jam tent, hosted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington. There’s also a playground and farm animals to keep the kids occupied.
