A walk for love

Fathers throng Meadow School for Dads Take Your Kids to School Day

The temperature was only in the 60s, but you could feel the warmth on Sept. 22 around Meadow Elementary School when the PTA sponsored Dads Take Your Kids to School Day.

The event was held to raise awareness of the importance of fathers in their children’s education, said PTA president Susan DeGraff.

“We really want to reach out to them [fathers] directly and in a concrete way,” she said. “We want to say if you only have thirty minutes, walk your kids to school.”

As an added benefit, DeGraff said, studies have shown that kids with involved fathers get better grades. She said the PTA is trying to reinforce the idea that it doesn’t take a lot for a parent to get involved in a child’s education.

“Together we can do great things,” she said. “So any parents can get involved.” For example, DeGraff said, a parent who is away from home “can Skype in reading a story.”

But the morning of Sept. 22 wasn’t all heavy theories on education. For the kids, there were stickers that said their dads brought them to school.

For the dads, there was coffee and raffles with prizes that included massages, golf games and a gift card from Katie O’Hara’s.

And for everyone, there was the warmth of love.
