An inside look of world outside the classroom

Students in Baldwin High School have been busy in recent months with more than just class work. Many young adults have gotten the opportunity to see real world work environments and received an inside look at how professionals in a variety of fields spend their days.

Through partnerships with different businesses and organizations, BHS students have traveled to workplaces in the area in order to expand their horizons. Professionals who have hosted BHS students in recent months at their place of work met on May 21 at BHS for some breakfast and to hear from students about their experiences.

Baldwin’s School-to-Career Breakfast featured more than 20 student speakers who discussed what they learned on these recent field trips and how it has impacted their future plans.

Last month, BHS student Tolulope Adebayo, took a tour of the Hofstra University School of Medicine where she viewed cadavers (corpses) and got to hold and inspect several types of cancers. It’s an experience she will not soon forget and called the day “life changing” and “earth shattering.” The Shadow Day, Adebayo said, will stick with her because “of its impact on my educational goals.” She hopes to pursue a career in obstetrics and one day become an OB/GYN.

Senior Genesis Martinez-Lopez took part in another medical Shadow Day at Mercy Medical Center in March. The district has had a working relationship with Mercy for 21 years.

Prior to touring Mercy, Martinez-Lopez said she was simply expecting to sit in on a consult, but her day was much more than that. She got a first-hand look at the hospital’s different departments, including a visit to see the newborns. For Martinez-Lopez, the day gave her “a new perspective on medicine.”

“Some people get lost in writing, other people get lost in dancing, but I get lost in medicine,” she said. “It was a day that I never wanted to end.” Martinez-Lopez will attend Hunter College in the fall where she will study biological science on a pre-med track.
