Baldwin ousted by Hicksville

A well-placed bounce on a free kick put No. 10 Baldwin in a first-half hole, and a flurry of goals early in the second half pushed No. 7 Hicksville past the Bruins, 4-1, in the first round of the Nassau Class AA boys soccer playoffs last Friday.

The Comets, who finished third in Conference AA-I, converted three headers in a span of just over two minutes early in the second half to take control and advance to the second round. “They had three free kicks and three headers [for goals],” Baldwin coach Mike Palumbo said. “There’s nothing you can do about that. It was us flattening out while they moved to the ball.”

Senior D.J. Hunter scored the lone Bruins goal, his 12th of the season, midway through the second half. “The potential was there this year,” Palumbo said. “But throughout the season we played hot and cold.”
