Baldwin’s LIRR train station trestle gets restored

Posted

Baldwin’s trestle at the Long Island Railroad was fully restored with a fresh coat of paint on Aug. 25 after months of anticipation from people within the community. State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Rockville Centre) was pleased to see the progress made at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Sunrise Highway.

“I am thankful that the LIRR has taken the necessary steps to paint the rusted train trestle over Grand Avenue,” Kaminsky said. “When I was first elected to the Senate, I met with the Baldwin Civic Association and they expressed their concerns over the trestle condition. Right then and there I made a commitment to push for this improvement. This will go a long way in enhancing a very visible area in Baldwin.”

Rita Cavanagh, leader of the beautification committee for the BCA has pushed for this restoration since Baldwin put up their sign at the platform in 2015.

“I am thrilled to see the trestle completed,” Cavanagh said. “They did a great job and the community seems very excited.”

Kaminsky stated his concerns of painting the deteriorating platform in multiple letters to MTA LIRR president Patrick Nowakowski in June and July. When Nowakowski connected with Kaminsky, he assured him that a scrape and paint makeover would be conducted once the LIRR Engineering Department could set up a temporary traffic detour while the engineers work.
