Brrrrr in Baldwin

Frigid temps have locals yearning for spring

Posted

Baldwin residents have been layered up recently as sub-freezing temperatures have almost become routine for the area. And according to the National Weather Service, those cold days and nights won’t be warming up in the immediate future, either.

Hot beverages and warm coats have come in handy so far this winter, and for Joanne Davis, a 16-year Baldwin resident, her car’s remote start feature is a luxury she wouldn’t want to be without. Since she works locally, the snowy and icy roads haven’t impacted her like other drivers, but she was happy schools were off last week so that she didn’t have any children to pick at 3 p.m. “I've pretty much been hibernating as much as possible,” she said.

Rich McNamme, a 40-plus year Baldwinite, said he’s also been staying inside — where it’s warm — whenever possible.

Temperatures will hover in the 20s and 30s this weekend, according to the National Weather Service, so Susan Barba and her children will have more time to watch movies inside. “My kids and I have seen so many On Demand movies this season that we didn't even know were in theatres,” she joked.

Even though it’s been freezing, Babra said New York is where her and her family’s heart is. “As many times as I may say to my husband ‘we need to move to a warmer climate,’” she said, “I know deep down inside we could never leave New York.”

So when it gets cold, Barba layers up and tries to limit her time outside.

Only a few more weeks until spring.
