A car slammed into a school minibus in Baldwin this morning while transporting five elementary-age children to the Grace Lutheran School in Malverne. All five were taken to Nassau University Medical Center as a precaution, and were soon after released, according to school principal Wanda Walters.

Hempstead Police Lieutenant Paul Johnson said a Volkswagen Rabbit hit the rear of the bus at 7:20 a.m. during a stop on Baldwin Road near Willow Drive. The bus’s red lights were flashing and the stop sign was out.

Walters, who received a call from the police about the accident, went to the scene and was told by the bus driver that the Rabbit was weaving in and out of traffic on the opposite side of the street, and eventually spun out of control and hit the back of the parked bus.

Walters went to the hospital and, after the children were released, transported all five to Grace Lutheran. “”They’re all back in school now,” said Walters. “We’re glad no one was hurt.”

The driver was cited for equipment violations, but not ticketed for a moving violation.
