Baldwin BOE picks Camhi as next superintendent

The Baldwin School District appears to have its next leader.

Dr. Shari Camhi is slated to take over as superintendent in September, following the announced retirement of Superintendent James Scannell earlier this school year. The Board of Education plans to formally appoint Camhi at its July 9 meeting, the district announced last Friday.

The board hired Hazard Young Attea & Associates, an executive search firm, in April. After the firm recommended the strongest applicants, the board interviewed prospective superintendents last month.

Camhi is currently the assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and instructional personnel in the Lindenhurst School District, and was previously an assistant superintendent in the Glen Cove School District, an assistant superintendent for secondary instruction in Mineola, and chair of computer instruction and technology in Bellmore-Merrick.

“I am so pleased to be the newest member of the Baldwin family,” Camhi said in a release. “It is with great pride, respect, a deep sense of commitment, and enthusiasm that I accept the role of superintendent of schools.”

Board Vice President Mary Jo O’Hagan told the Herald that Camhi’s background in curriculum, instruction and technology, as well as her experience working in diverse districts, set her apart from other candidates. “We really think this is an opportunity to build on what we have and really take Baldwin to a whole other level,” she said.

A reception, at which residents can meet and greet Camhi, is being planned for shortly before the Aug. 13 board meeting.
