Several years ago, Craig Hatchett, a personal trainer and owner of D-Fine Fitness in Albertson, went to Florida and observed a new workout craze. Indoor rowing was becoming more and more popular, due to newly designed rowing machines and a high intensity, low impact workout with incredible benefits. While, at that time, many fitness centers did offer rowing machines, none on Long Island specialized in rowing, exclusively. Hence, Hatchett opened the first Long Island indoor rowing studio (located inside D-Fine Fitness) and called it Row45.

The name Row45 refers to the rowing modality and 45 minutes, the length of each class. After launching the Albertson studio, Hatchett opened two more Row45 locations on Long Island’s North Shore — in Manhasset and Jericho. Hatchett is a graduate of Oceanside High School, so he then wanted to include the South Shore. Most recently, he opened a Row45 inside the Maple Avenue Dance Center in Rockville Centre.

Fitness Magazine cited indoor rowing as “The best workout around.”  What makes it so appealing is that it includes the legs, arms and core, and can burn 400 to 600 calories in 45 minutes. As rowing is a non-impact workout, it’s also easy on the joints.

During each class, students alternate between using the rowing machine and working out on a mat or standing, for cardio, toning and sculpting. Besides the rowing, a class could include light weights, planks, push-ups, bicep curls, tricep dips, squats and more. People work at their own pace, in small classes with individualized attention from certified instructors. There are 10 rowing machines in the studio.

Row45 uses the WaterRower, which is different from the conventional mechanical rowers one might know. The WaterRower’s unique design produces an accurate simulation of rowing in a body of water, by actually using water to provide resistance. There is no jerkiness or jarring — just smooth rowing with the pace set by leg movement. About 85 percent of the body’s muscles are used.

As with any exercise, if a person has a physical issue or injury, he or she should first check with their physician. Classes can be paid for individually or purchased as a package. Want to try it out? You can take an introductory class for just $15.
