Police arrested a Long Beach man on Tuesday after he and another suspect allegedly beat and robbed a man in Freeport as he attempted to retrieve his stolen bicycle.

Police said that the incident occurred on Sept. 27, at 12:55 p.m. According to police, the 44-year-old victim, walking north on South Main Street, observed 21-year-old Khaliek Stewart, of Long Beach, and another man riding bicycles, one of which belonged to the victim and was being used without permission.

“When the victim confronted the two men in attempt to get his bike back, Stewart swung his bicycle, striking the victim in his face, causing him to fall on the ground,” Nassau County police said in a statement. “The two men began punching and kicking the victim numerous times, causing a broken nose and contusions to his face.”

Police said Stewart then fled south on South Main Street on his yellow and black bicycle. The unidentified male, who was riding a red bicycle that allegedly belonged to the victim, fled the scene on foot, also heading south on South Main Street. He is described as 20-year-old black male with an average build and wearing a blue hat and gray hooded sweatshirt.

Freeport police officers responded to the scene, and the victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

Police located Stewart shortly after the incident in the parking lot of Home Depot, at 160 E. Sunrise Highway, and placed him under arrest. Police said they discovered that Khaliek was in possession of six alprazolam pills.

Stewart was charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 28.

Police are still searching for the other suspect, and said the investigation is ongoing.
