In that Axinn Library gallery, the museum offers “The Lyon, the Which, and the Warhol,” which remains on view through May 19. Here, culled from the museum’s extensive photography collection, visitors can see photos by photojournalist Danny Lyons and pop icon Andy Warhol juxtaposed with works by other photographers and artists in various mediums.
This exhibit, curated by the museum’s collections manager Kristy L. Caratzola, contextually links Lyons’ and Warhol’s photographs and Polaroids to such artists as Chuck Close, Jim Dine, and Lisbeth Firmin (the “Which.”). According to Levinthal, “The Lyon, the Which, and the Warhol encourages viewers to consider how artists employ portraiture and physical presence as well as other tools to break the barriers of societal stereotypes.”
Hofstra’s MFA creative writing students will share their original post-modern poetry inspired by works in the exhibition in a program titled “Warhol and Writings: Post-Modern and Existential Poetry Reading,” on April 29, at 7 p.m. This reading is free and open to the public.
