After allegedly stealing a car and attempting to run over Nassau County police officers with it early last Saturday morning in Westbury, a Baldwin man was shot and wounded by police before being arrested.

According to NCPD detectives, officers responded to a call about a suspicious car and occupant on Clinton Street in Westbury at around 4:15 a.m. As police approached the vehicle on foot, the driver, Levaughn Tingle, 25, of Joy Boulevard in Baldwin, attempted to flee the scene, striking a parked vehicle and then driving toward the officers, forcing them to retreat up the driveway of a Clinton Street residence, police said.

As the officers tried to avoid being crushed between the house and the vehicle, Tingle attempted to run down them down a second time, according to police. An officer then fired several rounds and struck Tingle.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and was transported to a local hospital, while three officers were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for trauma. The vehicle was reported stolen, police said.

Tingle was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and a parole violation. As the Herald went to press, the investigation was continuing.

According to police, Tingle has previous convictions for second-degree burglary, second-degree attempted burglary, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny. He has an active arrest parole warrant for absconding, police added.
