Gunshots rang out in two separate incidents, less than 48 hours apart, last week in Baldwin, according to Nassau County police.

On March 26, at 6:15 a.m., a man walked into the 7-Eleven on the corner of Grand Avenue and Miller Place armed with a hand gun and fired one round into the ceiling.

The subject, whom police describe as a white male wearing a gray pullover, a black knit hat, jeans, brown boots and a light-colored scarf, demanded that the clerk open the register and removed an undetermined amount of cash. The clerk was unable to open a second register, and the subject fired a second round into that register before fleeing on foot east on Miller Place, police said.

An arrest had not been made as of press time Monday. Detectives asked anyone with information about the crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS.

On March 28, at 3:10 a.m., 1st Precinct officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance on Grand Avenue, between Newton and Lorenz avenues, involving 10 to 15 people, after gunshots were heard.

When they arrived, police said, they found two victims, who were taken to a local hospital. The first, a 21-year-old man, suffered three non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his shoulder, thigh and ankle. The other victim, a 28-year-old woman, was struck with a handgun and had a lacerated ear.

An investigation led detectives to the arrest of two Uniondale men — Iquan Drew, 27, who, they said, was the shooter, and Steven Smith, 30, who drove Drew away from the scene of the incident.

Drew was charged with first- and second-degree assault, two counts each of second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree criminal use of a firearm. Smith was charged with second-degree hindering prosecution.

According to Paul Leonard, a spokesman from Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas’ office, Drew and Smith were arraigned on March 29. Drew’s bail was set at $500,000 while Smith’s bail was set at $20,000.
