'Miss Elaine' dies at 92

Hundreds remember Elaine Garrison (Miss Elaine) from their early childhoods. A gifted educator, her teaching career spanned nearly 60 years from 1946 to 2002. She taught kindergarten for the New York City Public School system and nursery school at Lynbrook’s Intercommunity Nursery School, Lawrence Country Day School and Trinity Church’s His Kids.

She taught Sunday school at St. James United Methodist Church in Lynbrook and for almost two decades was a pivotal leader of the local chapter of Camp Fire Girls, which she founded in the late 1950s.

Miss Elaine suffered a stroke six years ago and has been incapacitated ever since. She is survived by her loving husband, Edwin; their daughters Elaine Price (Gaithersburg, Md.), Alice Garrison (Lynbrook), Nancy Chafetz (Lynbrook), and Roberta Garrison-Mogren (Glenelg, Md.); grandchildren Rachel Carr (Latham, N.Y.), Rebecca Kless (Germantown, Md.), Gary Chafetz (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and Cynthia Cook (Finksburg, Md.); and great grandchildren: Carter and Joshua Carr, Behr, AJ, and Pierson Kless, and Ezekial and Clara Cook.

The wake will take place at Perry Funeral Home on Union Avenue in Lynbrook on Sunday, March 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. Funeral Service will be held there on Monday, March 6 at 11 a.m.
