Seniors compete in softball all-star game

Sixty years ago, the Brooklyn Dodgers took on their cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees, in a thrilling seven-game World Series that saw the Dodgers come out on top.

To commemorate the anniversary, a group of men who remember the World Series well squared off in their own game on July 15 at Baldwin Park. The Bristal All-Stars, of the Long Island Senior Softball Association and comprised of seniors in their 70s and 80s, took part in a friendly game that had one side wearing Yankees caps while the other donned Dodgers hats.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray kicked off the event by throwing out the first pitch and once the game got underway, the seniors ran, hit, caught and threw the ball all over the field.

There were plenty of line drives and superb defensive plays and even some dramatic situations, including the Dodgers working out of a bases loaded, no outs jam. The seniors, who come from all over Long Island and nearby boroughs, had a fun time competing with and talking trash to one another.

Unlike the World Series in 1965, though, the Yankees won this match-up by a final score of 5-4.
