Old, but still hot

Historical Society offers vintage Fire Department artifacts for display

Firefighting was the subject at last week’s Baldwin Historical Society meeting, with President Gary Farkash showing visitors an array of vintage photographs and artifacts from the Baldwin Fire Department.

Among the items was a photograph of the department on parade in Far Rockaway, Queens, in 1896 —the oldest known photograph of the department.

Many of the items came from the personal collection of former chief James C. McKeon.

But for all the vintage items, there were a few new items, Farkash said, including a new computer system that projected the images on a large screen for viewing. The displays last week marked the first time the new equipment was used at a Historical Society presentation.
