Police seek gunman

Authorities are seeking a man who they said is responsible for a string of late-night armed robberies at area gas stations in the last month, including Baldwin.

Police said the man has hit six service stations and made off with an undisclosed amount of money. They said the man typically enters the station, produces a handgun, demands money and leaves on foot.

The robberies happened at the following locations, according to police:

• BP Gas, 771 Peninsula Blvd., Hempstead: Aug. 4, 10:10 p.m.

• Mobil Gas, 1214 Grand Ave., Baldwin: Aug. 11, 11:05 p.m.

• Star Gas, 740 Hempstead Tpke., Franklin Square: Aug. 11, 11:32 p.m.

• BP Gas, 385 W. Merrick Rd., Valley Stream: Aug. 12, 11:45 p.m.

• Citgo Gas, 1338 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont: Aug. 18, 11:20 p.m.

• BP Gas, 3914 Sunrise Hwy., Seaford: Aug. 29, 10:49 p.m.

According to police, the thief is in his 20s, about 5 feet 8, with a medium build, dark complexion and facial hair. They said he is armed with a black semi-automatic handgun that he consistently covers with a T-shirt or cloth during a robbery. Also, he has worn a white camouflage hat.
