Romney’s anti-Trump rant: bad for country and party

Posted

The Republican presidential nominee in 2012, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, began his attacks on Donald Trump two weeks ago by calling for him to release his tax returns. Before giving a speech in which he roundly disparaged Trump, saying he was unfit to be president, Romney said that Trump’s taxes might contain a “bombshell” that would blow up his campaign.

Keep in mind that this is the same man who, when running for president, was pilloried for months before he finally released his own tax returns — well after he received the nomination and only after intense media pressure.

If you believe that Romney’s purpose in sabotaging Trump was to save the nation and the Republican Party, then you probably still believe in the Tooth Fairy. His speech was nothing more than an attempt to get himself nominated for president.

Romney would love to see a deadlocked Republican convention, so he could jump on his white horse and ride to Cleveland in July with his financial power brokers to become the nominee. His call for unity against Trump had little to do with what’s best for the country or the GOP, and everything to do with what’s best for Mitt Romney and his political future.

He didn’t have the courage to go through the arduous testing process that a primary entails. Shame on you, Mitt! Mark my words: Voters will see through his subterfuge rather than believe he had good intentions to beat the Democrats.

He’s eager to call for the release of Trump’s tax returns, but has yet to say one word about Hillary Clinton’s releasing the transcripts of her speeches to Goldman Sachs and the other financial giants that earned her $5 million. That’s the real political scam! Clinton claims to be the candidate who will take on Wall Street, but she refuses to give any details about the content of her paid speaking engagements. Wouldn’t it be interesting to compare what she says in private with her public remarks?

Instead of acting like a spoiled rich kid who’d like to be anointed through the back door of a brokered convention, Romney should have the courage to take on the Democrats and the real campaign issues.
