Schools’ new leader excited to get started

Herald Q&A with Dr. Shari Camhi

Posted

Dr. Shari Camhi got her first teaching job in 1982. Since then she’s held a variety of positions, in this country and abroad, in education and business, working primarily in public and private schools. On Sept. 11 she officially took over as superintendent of Baldwin schools.

Camhi, who grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in Melville with her husband, Stuart, and two children, has focused on technology for more than 30 years. She has worked for computer companies, overseen school districts’ technology practices and owned her own business in the late 1990s until 2001, helping school districts formulate technology plans.

She has been an assistant superintendent in Mineola, Glen Cove and Lindenhurst in the past 10 years, and was offered Baldwin’s superintendent’s position in June, after James Scannell announced his retirement over the winter. The Board of Education approved Camhi’s appointment in July.
