Trio of Baldwin residents kick off Legislative campaigns

Democrats Laura Curran and Jack McCloy and Republican Debbie Pugliese, the three Baldwin residents seeking the 5th District legislative seat that 14-year veteran Joe Scannell will leave when his term concludes, got their campaigns in gear last week.

Curran, who will face McCloy in a primary on Sept. 10, held the first event, a campaign kickoff at Rockville Centre’s Dunns River Lounge on Aug. 8. The Jamaican bar and eatery, which is owned by Curran’s Baldwin neighbor Naala Royale, was packed to capacity with supporters, including county executive candidate Tom Suozzi and Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall.

Suozzi spoke on behalf of Curran, who previously worked in communications for Nassau County. He called the Board of Education trustee and former editor of the Baldwin Herald “one of the strongest members of the Democratic ticket,” and predicted she would bring energy and an ability to build consensus to the Legislature.

The New York League of Conservation Voters and the Long Island Federation of Labor also recently endorsed Curran, 45, a mother of three and a former reporter for the New York Post and the Daily News. “Laura Curran is the environmental advocate that District 5 deserves,” NYLCV President Marcia Bystryn said in a release. “Her knowledge concerning environmental issues in Nassau County proves her capability for the job.”

Curran cites Republican mismanagement and the need for new ideas as the cornerstones of her campaign. “Nassau County is a great place to live, work and raise a family,” she said. “I want to do everything I can to preserve all the good things while making sure we’re on solid financial ground. Under the current Republican leadership, the county has had three bond downgrades and we’re mired in debt. We need a fresh start.”

Just a few days after the Curran launch, Pugliese, a 23-year resident of Baldwin and a marketing manager for the ParSal Vending Co., opened the doors of her campaign headquarters.
