Homecoming Week boosts the Bulldog spirit

Posted

As the vibrant streamers line the hallways of Hewlett High School, balloons fill the air, and students enter the building sporting the specific theme of the day, there is no question, Homecoming Week is here.

The student body has been working tirelessly to make this year’s homecoming a unifying and fun event. Each grade is producing and selling their own attire, creating artistically superb banners, and preparing to be the loudest fans for game day.

The week began on Oct. 15. As dusk fell, the senior class gathered at North Woodmere Park with spirit simmering in the air. Within an instant, paint and decorations find their way to everyone’s car. By the time the decorating is finished, our once mundane cars are given a complete, highly spirited make over.
Each Homecoming Week school day entails a day of spirit.

Monday was Pajama Day, Tuesday was TV Tuesday, where students dress as their favorite television characters. Wednesday was black out day, underclassmen wear black attire and seniors wear fluorescent items and other eccentric pieces, such as tutus, large bows, and bold suspenders. Thursday was theme day. This year’s theme is cities; the seniors are New York City, the juniors are Las Vegas, the sophomores are Los Angeles, and the freshman are Miami.

Students are expected to dress in such a way that personifies and symbolizes different aspects of their city. Friday ended theme week with both faculty and the student body decked out in all Hewlett High attire.

With pure excitement fluttering through the halls, the student body highly anticipates the early end of Friday’s school day because of the pep rally, which began with the marching band parading through the hallways right before the end of 10th period. As the dismissal bell rings, students flock to the gymnasium and are given pom-poms, noisemakers and beaded necklaces.

Upon entering, the marching band lifts the excitement as they perform and students find their way to their grades’ section of the bleachers. Once everyone is seated the fall teams are announced as they enter the gym, starting with girls varsity swimming and ending with our varsity football team. Soon after, the chorale sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” then the rally began!

Some highlights include performances by the cheerleaders, color guard and band, and everyone’s favorite team, the Step Squad. This is a group of musically inclined students who choreograph a dance and through hand-boning and stomping, create a performance that excites the crowd.

The student body awaits in anticipation to hear whom the Homecoming princes, princesses, queen, and king are. Students are nominated by teachers and are voted on by their grade’s students.

The week of jammed pack excitement and school spirit led up to the big football game against Division High School. Kick off at 3 p.m. on Oct. 21. One hour before the game is the Homecoming Parade down Broadway from Hewlett Elementary School to the high school campus.

The band has been preparing an exquisite playlist and has been working daily to master the half time show. Come show your support and wish us luck this Saturday!
