New York American Water has scheduled a community meeting on its proposed iron filtration facility. The meeting will take place on Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m., at the American Legion Hall on Grand Avenue.

Residents will be updated on the plan to build the facility on Seaman Avenue before the Town of Hempstead’s Board of Appeals hears the private utility’s request at a Nov. 28 meeting.

A water production and treatment facility already stands at 915 Seaman Ave. Construction on the proposed filtration facility would take 18 months, according to NYAW officials. Iron in water is not a health concern, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but it can cause water to become discolored

The construction would not cause any rate increases as it was included in the rate plan approved by the state in 2017.
