South Shore fire departments responded to house fires at 516 Arlington Road in Cedarhurst, and 245 Pepperidge Road in Hewlett Harbor on March 23.

The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department was the first on the scene in Cedarhurst. Chief David Campbell said that call came in at 2:22 p.m. The homeowner was home when an appliance fire broke out in her kitchen. “The fire was going through the kitchen cabinets and across the ceiling,” he said.

There were no injuries, however the kitchen was destroyed and the second floor had some smoke and water damage, Campbell said. The Nassau County Fire Marshal is investigating the fire, but it does not appear to be suspicious, he added. The Hewlett, Inwood, Woodmere and Long Beach departments assisted Lawrence-Cedarhurst.

The Hewlett Fire Department received a call for an electrical fire on Pepperidge Road just over an hour later, at 3:25 p.m. According to Katherine McGeary, a dispatcher for the Hewlett department said that the fire began in the ceiling of the master bathroom and spread through the ceiling and walls into the master bedroom and the attic.

Nassau police were the first on the scene, and the Valley Stream Fire Department brought a ladder truck to assist. “There were no injuries,” McGeary said. “At least one person was home… the fire marshal will likely investigate, but it wasn’t suspicious. They can see right where it started.
