A mother of a child with developmental disabilities kept getting up to attend to the boy, who was disrupting the service. Saban’s heart sunk. When New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia served as a municipal court judge early in his career, a man who was caught stealing a loaf of bread was brought before him for sentencing. LaGuardia’s judgment that day, so the story goes, made an impact on everyone in the courtroom. The man was going to have to pay a fine for the theft as well the bread that he stole. Then La Guardia asked all in the courtroom to empty their pockets to cover the man’s fine. He said, “We are all responsible for the society where a man needs to steal a loaf of bread to survive.” more
The Bellmore Jewish Center will welcome its new spiritual leader to the community this summer, as Rabbi Dahlia Bernstein is preparing to start her tenure as rabbi of the synagogue. The center, located at 2550 Centre Ave., is a full egalitarian conservative synagogue that officials said emphasizes family services and programs. President Ian Wald said congregants would have the chance to meet Bernstein at their “Shabbat Under the Stars” open house at 6 p.m. on July 12 before she officially starts on Aug. 1. more
