The 11th annual Robbie’s Run attracted hundreds of runners to south Merrick on Sunday. Proceeds from the race and walk go to purchase automated external defibrillators for youth athletic fields and schools.

Robbie's Run keeps on growing

A heavy rain could not stop hundreds from running or walking in the 11th annual Robbie’s Run at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick on May 22, as the event has continued to grow since its start in 2006. James Forte, a 17-year-old senior on the Calhoun High School track team, won the 5K for the second straight year, with a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds. more

Josh Levine, 16, of Merrick, at right, suffered a concussion in a Kennedy High School junior-varsity baseball game last spring, when a runner slammed into him while he was playing catcher. He was knocked unconscious and now struggles to concentrate and read. He was joined here by his family in April at the annual 5K Robbie’s Run that they sponsor in honor of his late brother, who died while rounding the bases during a Little League practice. Concussions rattle Central District athletes

Central expands CPR/AED training to all schools

All 1,360 Calhoun High School students are now receiving potentially life-saving training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of the automated external defibrillator. By the end of the school year, all 5,562 students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District will be trained. more

Robbie's Run set for Sunday, April 27, in Merrick

The ninth annual Robbie’s Run will take place on Sunday, April 27, at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School and on the nearby streets of south Merrick. The event, which includes a 5K run, a one-mile mini-run and a half-mile children’s fun run, is held in memory of 9-year-old Robbie Levine, a Merokean who died of sudden cardiac arrest while running the bases during a Little League baseball practice in 2005. more

Secrets to saving a life revealed at Merrick Avenue Middle School

Big, blue canvas bags labeled “Little Anne” and “Baby Anne” sat at the entrance to the Merrick Avenue Middle School gymnasium last Thursday. Spread across the shiny wooden floor in neat rows were mannequins, a.k.a. dummies. And in a corner, physical-education teachers Art Canestro, Mallory Cogen and Jason Dove were showing a film that revealed the secrets to saving a life with only your hands and mouth to a class of eighth-graders. Soon the students were kneeling before the mannequins, pumping the dummies’ chests with their locked hands and breathing into their plastic mouths. more
