3. Lawrence football
A week after Lawrence became the first Nassau County high school football team to reach 500 wins, an unlikely hero emerged in victory No. 501 that will forever have a place in Golden Tornadoes history. Kicker Daniel Reiskin’s 27-yard field goal as time expired gave Lawrence a miraculous come-from-behind 28-27 victory over Plainedge in the Nassau Conference III championship game at Hofstra on Nov. 23. The Golden Tornadoes, who went on to beat Huntington for their second straight L.I. crown, faced a fourth-and-10 at their own 25 with just over a minute remaining when quarterback Joe Capobianco hit senior Sean Moran deep over the middle for a 43-yard gain. Capobianco then completed three more passes to set up the winning kick for coach Joe Martillotti’s team.

4. Carey football
A week after winning its first Nassau County football championship in 35 years, Carey put the finishing touch on a perfect season Nov. 29 by capturing its first-ever Long Island title, beating Riverhead, 20-6, for the Class II crown at Hofstra. Led by Ray Catapano and Andrew Ris, the Seahawks scored all of their points in the second quarter, including two touchdowns in a span of 1:02, and carried a 20-0 lead into the fourth. Catapano’s nifty 7-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal opened the scoring 1:34 into the second, and his two-point conversion pass that followed to Nick Spillane provided Carey — coached by Mike Stanley — with all the offense it would need on the way to making history.
