Bellmore Chamber awards scholarships

The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores celebrated the achievements of three Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District seniors by awarding them scholarships on June 18.

The chamber annually awards a scholarship to one graduating senior from Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools. Students must have made significant scholastic achievements, be involved in school and community activities, and plan to pursue careers in business. After receiving nominations for the award from administrators at each school, the chamber recently honored Alani Garcia (Calhoun), Konnor Press (Kennedy) and Dylan Christie (Mepham).

“The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores is proud to award three deserving high school students a scholarship for their outstanding scholastic and athletic achievements and community involvement,” said Debby Izzo, the chamber president.

Chamber members recognized the seniors at their June 18 meeting, presenting each with a $500 check. The students previously received certificates at their respective schools’ senior awards nights. At the meeting, Izzo shared information about each scholarship recipient’s high school career.

Press, whom Izzo described as an intelligent, motivated and well-rounded young man, was introduced first. As a three-sport athlete, Press was also a member of Kennedy’s Athletes Helping Athletes group, which works with elementary and middle school students to teach them about the importance of making positive choices and maintaining good health. He is also a member of the national and Spanish honor societies and the Future Business Leaders of America.
