Three Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District students have been named semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Alaina Anderson of Sanford H. Calhoun, Maximilian Bazil of John F. Kennedy and Rachel Jozwick of Wellington C. Mepham all received the distinction.

“Having students earn this recognition is a symbol of their test preparedness and academic work ethic,” said David Seinfeld, the Central District’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 16,000 students, or one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, qualified as semifinalists. Finalists will be notified in February.
