Cops: Teens break into Calhoun at night

Posted

Police officers nabbed Matt Delucia, 17, and Kevin Hassan, 16, both of Merrick, while they were burglarizing Calhoun High School on Sunday night, according to the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct. Delucia and Hassan reportedly ran as the officers approached, but they were stopped and arrested after police corralled them just feet off campus, at Relyea Drive and Charlson Court.

A triggered alarm alerted school personnel to the intruders at Calhoun, according to police. They said a 59-year-old male staffer, dispatched to check on the alarm, observed someone rifling through a desk in the school. He or his supervisors then called police.

Police allege that Delucia stole a set of keys from the school, which he had on him when he and Hassan were arrested.

Officer Steven Zacchia, a Nassau County Police Department spokesman, said no further information was available about why Delucia and Hassan allegedly broke into the school or what they planned to do with the keys.

Both teenagers were arraigned on third-degree burglary charges, and Delucia was also arraigned on a fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property charge, on Monday, Jan. 20, at Nassau County’s First District Court in Hempstead.

Delucia and Hassan's attorney, Milton Grunwald, could not be reached Tuesday for comment.
