A West Hempstead man threatened a volunteer of the Franklin Square/Munson Fire Department with a gun while the victim was collecting donations on July 19 at 8:30 p.m. in West Hempstead, Nassau County Police said.

According to police, while members of the Franklin Square Munson Fire Department were conducting their annual door-to-door solicitation for donations on Dogwood Avenue, a volunteer knocked on the door of the defendant Carl Semencic, 65 of Dogwood Avenue. The defendant came to the door holding a black handgun in his left hand and exited the home. He then tapped on the front glass door with the gun, pointing to a sign that read “DO NOT KNOCK, NO PEDDLERS” and told the volunteer to “Go away”. The firefighter backed away and notified police. Responding officers spoke with Semencic and subsequently placed him under arrest without incident.

Semencic is charged with second-degree menacing and possession of a dangerous weapon. He was issued a Desk Appearance Ticket to respond on Thursday, August 11, to First District Court in Hempstead.
