Cruz campaign stops off in Bellmore

Pastor John Gravagna introduced Heidi Cruz, wife of presidential candidate Ted Cruz, to a crowd of more than 70 people during a visit to Connect Church in Bellmore last Monday. The visit was part of a whirlwind meet-and-greet tour across Long Island ahead of the April 19 primary.

Cruz addressed several topics of concern to her husband, including immigration, healthcare reform and foreign policy, while noting the growing frustration that many Americans feel toward the political system.

“Right now there’s an anger in this country,” said Cruz. “An anger of the political class that no longer represents the people but represents their own special interest … We need someone who is going to be an agent of change.”

Cruz said her husband would boost the private sector by lowering taxes, repealing the Affordable Care Act and taking on illegal immigration. At the same time, she said, he would close several federal agencies, including the departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, and Housing and Urban Development Development, as well as the Internal Revenue Service.

“We need someone who has taken on the unwitting political class, who doesn't just say that they will, and doesn’t say they’ve now been convinced and change [their position] on every single issue… We need to elect someone with a proven record, and I believe Ted is the right person for this.”

She also offered a glimpse into the life of Ted Cruz, the man. Recounting stories of her husband’s past, she spoke about his family, his spiritually and what drives him, citing his strong work ethic and dedication to his ideals.

“This is not [Ted’s] story; it’s God’s story… This was the right race to run in, we’re doing our best, and if we all band together, we will represent the values this country holds dear.”
