Hundreds of Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham students were inducted into their high schools’ chapters of the National Honor Society on April 9.

The society recognizes students’ academic excellence and commitment to success, Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District officials said. Students are selected for induction based on academic performance and community service.

At Mepham High School, 139 students were inducted into the National Honor Society. About 125 students were inducted to Calhoun’s chapter, according to the district, an 133 were accepted at Kennedy.

Students participated in candle-lighting ceremonies to signify their induction into the society. The ceremonies highlighted the National Honor Society’s four pillars –– character, scholarship, leadership and service. Members of the building and central administrations, as well as the Board of Education, congratulated inductees as they crossed the stage at each school.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals established the National Honor Society in 1921. The NASSP has awarded National Honor Society scholarships since 1946, providing more than $10 million in funds to outstanding student members. The program awards $250,000 annually.
