Mepham English teacher recognized for excellence

Mepham High School English teacher Nicole Maresca was recently recognized as a 2014 New York State English Council Educator of Excellence for her efforts in the classroom, and she will be honored at the NYSEC Conference on Oct. 22.
The recognition follows a lengthy application process that included a nomination letter, letters of recommendation from a colleague, a supervisor and a former student, and the submission of several instructional materials.
In one of her letters from a former student, Maresca was described as “an inspiration and a role model. Her caring disposition makes her classroom feel light and comfortable. I would sit in her classroom and think, I want to be a great teacher like her one day."
Maresca started her tenure in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District as a student-teacher and intern. During her 13 years at Mepham, she has taught almost every grade and academic level and several elective courses. She is also the adviser for Fragments, Mepham’s literary and art magazine, and is the lead teacher for Poetry Out Loud.
At the Oct. 15 meeting of the Bellmore-Merrick Board of Education, Maresca was recognized for her achievements and presented with a certificate of congratulations from the board.
