Mepham alum covering World Series

Former Bellmorite is a Mets beat writer for ESPN

Thousands of Long Islanders were overjoyed to see New York Mets captain David Wright smiling and drinking champagne with his teammates at Wrigley Field on Oct. 21, after the “Amazins” swept the Chicago Cubs to capture the National League Championship and clinch a World Series berth. For Adam Rubin, who grew up in Bellmore and is now the lead Mets beat writer for espnnewyork.com, that moment was special in a deeper way.

“When you watch a team for 15 years up close, and you see at a personal level how hard it is for someone like [Wright] to be going home every September, to [see him] celebrating when they won the pennant, you can’t help but be pleased,” Rubin said. “The veterans are some of the most exceptional people you could ever meet … There are a lot of veterans who desperately want to win the title. They know they have unfinished business still.”

Rubin, 41, who now makes his home in Long Beach, wrote his first story about Wright when he was playing single-A minor league ball (published in the Daily News in 2003). Now he’ll be covering Wright and the Mets in the World Series.
Born in the Bronx, Rubin moved to Bellmore with his family in 1981, when he was in third grade. He attended Saw Mill Road Elementary School and then Jerusalem Avenue Middle School for a year before it closed. He went on to graduate from Grand Avenue Middle School in 1987 and Mepham High School in 1991.

He attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in economics. After graduating in 1995, he landed a one-year internship at the Birmingham News in Alabama.

Shortly after, Rubin became a full-time staff writer for the Daily News, covering the government and police beats. After a brief stint at the Shreveport Times in Louisiana, he returned to the Daily News in 2000 and was assigned to cover the Mets in 2003. In March 2010 he was hired to report on the team for espnnewyork.com.

Rubin said he wasn’t a big Mets fan as a kid. He rooted for the Mets and Yankees, and had Islanders season tickets. Like Mets fans everywhere, he has watched as the team has struggled over the years.

“Before this year, they suffered through two collapses and six straight losing seasons,” he said. “Finally having the Mets in the playoffs and having bragging rights and something to celebrate is something Mets fans are really enjoying right now.”
