Shoppers from near and far poured into North Bellmore’s newest grocery store last Friday.

North Shore Farms, a Long Island-based grocery chain founded in 2003, opened its first South Shore store on Nov. 14. Company representatives said they hope to bring a wide array of food products and quality service to local shoppers.

Staff and managers of the store, at 2820 Jerusalem Ave., welcomed elected officials and local residents to the supermarket for a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday night before Friday morning’s grand opening. At the store’s opening day, dozens of local folks stopped by the 16,900-square-foot store, eager to see the selection of foods offered.

George Tsiatis, a North Shore Farms spokesman, said the company also has supermarkets in Commack, Glen Cove, Great Neck, Mineola and Port Washington. North Shore Farms provides product diversity, he explained, by selling the best of what traditional grocery stores offer, along with a number of items that can only be found at farmers’ markets and specialty shops.

“The combination appeals to people, as they can get all of their shopping done in one place,” he said. “We saw this as an opportunity to share our perspective on what a fresh food market should be.”

Tsiatis noted that North Shore Farms stocks a range of brands, from national to organic and imported. The company sells 600 types of cheese.

North Shore Farms also offers a variety of fresh products, Tsiatis noted. The store features butcher, seafood and bakery counters, with breads, cakes and confections made on site. Tsiatis added that prices are competitive.

The store opening created more than 100 jobs for local residents, Tsiatis said. Much of the store’s staff lives in or near North Bellmore, with some attending Kennedy and Mepham high schools.

“We hope that our customers have a great experience,” Tsiatis said. “This grand opening showcases our excitement to be here.”
