Q: Are there infections that can spread from my puppy to my children?

Posted

The good news is that there aren’t many things that can spread from your new puppy to your children.  The most common concern is intestinal parasites (worms).  Some intestinal parasites can spread from pets to humans. This will only occur if someone accidentally ingests the stool.  So it is very rare for this to happen especially with the family washing their hands.  With that being said, you must make sure your puppy is screened for parasites and gets routine dewormings.

There is also a skin condition called ringworm. Ringworm is actually a fungus that can grow on the skin of animals and people.  If you have a new puppy you should bring them to your veterinarian for a check up, especially if you see anything abnormal on the skin.  Your veterinarian can check the skin to see if there are any lesions that can be a concern for ringworm.

Alternatively, there are some regular foods that your children may have in their hands that you need to make sure your puppy doesn’t grab.  Most common foods are grapes, raisins, chocolate, and sugar free candy and gum.  Each of these foods are toxic for pets.  If your pet accidentally ingests these from your children’s hands or from the floor you should call your veterinarian immediately.
