Police: Man shot, arrested in N. Bellmore liquor store robbery

Posted

Shots were fired outside a North Bellmore liquor store around 6:35 p.m. on Monday, according to Nassau County police.

It all began when three men entered Newbridge Wine and Liquors, at 1377 Newbridge Road, on Aug. 8 and stole assorted bottles of liquor, police said. The trio left the store and stashed the merchandise in a 2015 Toyota Corolla parked out front.

The store owner, a 69-year-old man, approached the men and ordered them to stop, police said. One ran off. The other two hopped into the Corolla and prepared to drive off. The shop owner tried to stop them by reaching through the passenger side of the car to take the key from the ignition.

The driver, identified by police as Jamik Cannon, 23, of Hempstead, put the car in reverse, causing the store owner to lose his balance. He was dragged for about 20 feet. As he was dragged, he pulled out his legally licensed handgun and fired the weapon, striking Cannon in his right shoulder.

Cannon and his alleged accomplice in the passenger seat ran off north on Newbridge Road, officials said. Detectives found Cannon at a nearby hospital, where he was arrested.

Cannon was charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, second-degree reckless endangerment and petit larceny. He will be arraigned when medically practical.

Police cordoned off Newbridge Road, from Bellmore Avenue to the south, nearly as far north as the police garage beside the Stop & Shop grocery store, immediately after the shooting. Officers were seen on the west side of Newbridge Road, opposite the liquor store, combing the ground, apparently searching for bullets. At one point, a German shepherd was brought in to sniff the sidewalk.

Police are investigating and searching for Cannon’s two alleged accomplices. Detectives ask anyone with information about this crime to call 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
