State honors retired N. Bellmore nurse

Christine MacLeod, the now retired nurse at Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in North Bellmore, was awarded the 2014 Excellence in School Nursing Award by the New York State Association of School Nurses.

MacLeod retired last June. Before she did, she received the honor, which is given to those who excel in the practice of school nursing by acting as student advocates, care providers, change agents and educators. North Bellmore School District Superintendent Marie Testa agreed that MacLeod showed exemplary performance in all areas.

MacLeod devoted herself to the Dinkelmeyer community for 20 years, Testa noted while recognizing retirees at a Board of Education meeting last spring. Whether it was an asthma attack, broken bone or “boo-boo” that needed attention, MacLeod was a constant source of comfort to hundreds of children who passed through Dinkelmeyer’s halls.

Throughout the years, MacLeod also personally funded and orchestrated Thanksgiving food drives, complete with turkeys and pies, as well as holiday gift drives for hundreds of North Bellmore children and families.

In her retirement, MacLeod is spending more time with her grandchildren. She also plans to travel and continue her volunteer work in the community.
