Specializing in high end, trendy apparel for both men and women, Clothes Horse has recently closed its store in Roosevelt Field and built a new one in Merrick. “We wanted more of a community feeling,” said Michael Wasser, who carries on the business his father founded in the 70s. “And we have a great customer base on the South Shore. Some of our clientele covers three generations.”

Michael’s father, Marty Wasser, started out as a salesman in Manhattan’s garment center. In those days, the natural progression was to go into retail, so he chose to open a store in Brooklyn. “Back then,” said Michael, “Kings Highway was like the Rodeo Drive of the East.” The Brooklyn Clothes Horse has thrived at that same location for the past 40 years, and had undergone four extensions. A sister store was eventually opened on Route 100 in Huntington, and now, the newest, in Merrick.

Clothes Horse can best be described as a store that caters to teens and adults who want the newest styles. Michael Wasser uses the term “heavily denim oriented,” since they carry the most popular brands of jeans. For the ladies, you’ll find names like J Brand, AG, and Seven, in sizes 24 to 32. Guys can shop for brands like True Religion, Diesel, and Buffalo in sizes 28 to 42. Sportswear continues with tops, blouses, slacks and sweaters…but it doesn’t stop there. On the dressier end they carry shirts, skirts, and dresses. Accessories include jewelry, scarves, gloves and even some shoes.

Merchandise shown in Clothes Horse often cannot be found in department stores. Buyers search for the most unique, upscale items in the latest trends. Shopping is done in California and overseas, particularly in Paris.

The three stores range in size from 3,500 to 6,000 square feet. Each location employs carefully chosen sales help who will bend over backwards to please the clientele. On many occasions they will call a customer when certain items come in that they know would be of interest to that person. “We want to make people happy, and to be satisfied with what they purchase,” added Michael Wasser. “Shopping should be fun.”

Still celebrating its Grand Opening, Clothes Horse in Merrick debuted on Dec. 17, 2012. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
