Students celebrate Dr. Seuss's legacy

Students across Bellmore-Merrick joined in celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2 by taking part in a series of fun, wacky and playfully interactive events. Students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore engaged in Read Across America, sponsored by the National Education Association.

In addition to an abundance of reading activities, the Reinhard students received a visit by students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s child-development class at John F. Kennedy High School, who helped the youngsters craft iconic red-and-white striped Dr. Seuss hats. The children enjoyed the older students’ company, and the activity assisted in their development of fine-motor skills.

At the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, housed at the Brookside School in North Merrick, students and staff celebrated Seuss’s birthday with a string of artistic and thematic activities. School nurse Darlene Boden was the mastermind behind the event. Doors were decorated in Dr. Seuss themes, and teachers and students dressed the part, donning signature Seuss garb.

“She not only created all of the decorations, but she coordinated with the child care and made green eggs –– deviled eggs, which were filled with green filling,” said Principal Susan Ellinghaus.
