Burning the chometz before Passover in Woodmere

Posted

Chometz, non-kosher food for Passover, was burnt at the annual burning at the Woodmere firehouse on April 19, just before the beginning of the eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation from slavery of the ancient Hebrews from Egypt.

Based on the Old Testament’s Book of Exodus, the Hebrews left at such a rapid pace that there was no time for the bread to be baked so unleavened bread — matzo — was made. During their sojourn to Canann — what was then Israel — they received the Ten Commandments. Seders, the Passover meals, are guided by the Haggadah, a book that recounts the holiday story. This year Passover is from April 19 to 27.
