Lawrence golf captures Five Towns Cup

It took two playoff holes, but the Lawrence Men’s Golf Club defeated the Rockaway Hunting Club team on Oct. 7, to win the annual Five Towns Cup Tournament. The competition was also played on Oct. 1.

The Rockaway Hunting Club and the Inwood Country Club hosted this year’s tournament. Both course offered fantastic conditions, golfers said, who also appreciated the work of tournament director Adam Russell. After the first round of play, the Rockaway Hunting Club held a 5-shot lead over Team Lawrence and an 8-shot lead over the team from the Seawane Country Club.

After the second round, the teams from Lawrence and Rockaway Hunt were tied with a score of 283 with Seawane at 284. Three members from the Lawrence and Rockaway Hunt teams went to the 1st tee for a best ball, sudden death playoff.

After a halve on hole No.1, Scott Lipareli, of the Lawrence team. hit an approach shot on hole No. 2 to eight inches for birdie to win the match. It was Lawrence first Cup victory since 2008.
