Merrick gas main project underway

National Grid says contractor damaged gas main, entirety needs replacing

National Grid officials announced last week that a major gas main replacement project was expected to begin on April 1, affecting parking and traffic on a number of roads in Merrick during business hours.

Officials said that during a 2017-18 installation of an underground gas main, a contractor, while cleaning the main, caused damage to the inside, and the company now has to replace the entire main.

“We are committed to making every effort to keep neighbors informed and minimize inconvenience and disruptions to the greatest extent possible,” National Grid officials wrote online.

The replacement will be paid for by the contractor, and will not affect rate-payers financially, National Grid spokeswoman Wendy Ladd said Tuesday.
