Students spread heart disease awareness

February is not only known for its candy hearts on Valentine’s Day, but across the country it’s recognized as American Heart Month as an effort to spread awareness of heart disease and the American Heart Association. Students in the East Meadow School District got involved in the philanthropy through various classroom activities.

W.T. Clarke Middle School held a two-day basketball-themed event called Hoops for Heart, which raised money for the American Heart Association.

On Jan. 23 and 24, all students participated in a knock-out basketball contest during their physical education classes. Class winners advanced to the final, held after school on Jan. 25. The overall winner was eighth-grader Tyseer Rahman, who was presented with a Hoops for Heart basketball.

In addition to Rahman, winners included eigth-grade students Sophie Aprea, Emily Brown, Isabella Canzoneri, James DeSimone and James Papacostas; seventh-grade students Jadon Chang, Aanya Mehta, Maddie Millman and Dominic Murawski, and sixth-grade students Caleb DaRocha, Jack Giudice, Cole Kaufer and Jack Morovich.

Donations are being collected until Feb. 14 as the W.T. Clarke community looks to further their support of the American Heart Association.

Students and teachers at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District got involved by dressing in red on Feb. 1, or National Wear Red Day, to kick off the month of awareness.
