In an effort to promote physical activity and battle inactivity and the growing problem of childhood obesity, the Lawrence Primary School at the Number Two School is taking part in the second annual national Take Your Parent to PE Week from Sept. 24 to 28.
According to research by multiple organizations, 2 out of 3 children are not being physical enough. The idea as promulgated by Active School is a national movement to ensure that 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools across the country. Lawrence Primary School houses kindergarten to second grade.
“The purpose is to introduce our school’s PE program and teachers to parents so they will engage with physical education throughout the year,” said Tara Nelson a physical education teacher at Lawrence Primary School, “ and, to encourage families to be physically active together at home and in the community. Parents will be invited to join their child’s PE class on a designated day and participate with their child in physical education activities.”
In addition physical movement can also contribute to higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior in class, enhanced leadership skills and a lifetime of healthy habits.
