Traffic was thankfully light on Wednesday morning when a water main broke near Ocean Avenue and Merrick Road in Lynbrook. At about 8:30 a.m., Long Island American Water saw a pressure drop in area. They sent a crew to the intersection of Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue and found a leak in a 20-inch main, located under the street. "We investigated the leak and we were able to isolate the main," said William Varley, president of Long Island American Water. "Right now it's isolated and we can operate it like that." Only three people lost service, and they were given temporary service . It took about an hour to repair, "The inclement weather hindered us a bit, but our crews have experience doing this," Varley said. America Water had one large crew there. Varley said that they will come back at a later date and replace that section of the main. He could only speculate why it leaked, "Until a further investigation is done, it would only be speculation." The crews were out there from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. rerouting traffic away from the area. It's a temporary restoration, Varley said, and they will come back to replace the entire section within upcoming weeks. more
