After speaking to her family, who is dispersed between Cedarhurst, Long Beach, New York City and Port Washington, and then reading comments on Facebook and viewing random online videos of the destruction Hurricane Sandy wrought in her native area, Boca Raton, Fla. resident Mara Cavallo Benkirane became determined to help.

The NuHealth staff expressed their appreciation to the entire Disaster Medical Assistance Team for their support and hard work during the past week in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The group supplemented the Nassau University Medical Center staff as the hospital’s census had increased by almost two hundred patients after the hurricane.

Thousands of Long Islanders had their homes and property destroyed during Hurricane Sandy and are now left to pick up the pieces. Fortunately for all, several nation organizations have been working around the clock in recent weeks to lend a helping hand.

Part one in a series on how South Shore residents are coping in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. This week we begin in Bellmore-Merrick. In subsequent weeks we plan to spotlight recovery efforts in other communities.
John Giammarino’s one-level house stood near the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Clubhouse Road for 30 years. But only three years after the south Bellmore resident began renting the waterfront home, his landlord sent crews to rip out what was left of the walls.

Weary homeowners battered by Hurricane Sandy began to trickle into the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mobile Disaster Recovery Center at Nassau Community College’s Student Union, a red-brick building on the west side of the campus, when it opened last Friday. The center was set up to help homeowners who suffered losses in the massive storm to file for grants that will enable them to rebuild.
