Mirian Bejarano, 52, was pronounced dead, according to Nassau County police, minutes after they discovered her lying unconscious on the floor of her Prospect Avenue home at around 4 p.m. on April 28.

Police say she was murdered, and as the Herald went to press this week, they were still investigating the crime.

“We do not believe this to be a random act of violence,” said Kevin Smith, the NCPD’s chief of detectives, at a media briefing on April 29.

Bejarano lived with her husband and son at 1875 Prospect Ave., and had tenants living upstairs.

Smith did not reveal any other details about the investigation, but said that police were locating family members and planned to speak with them. He said that no calls had ever been made from the residence to police seeking assistance.

Brothers Nick and Tom, who live next door and asked to be identified only by their first names, said that Bejarano was always friendly when they greeted her outside their home. “I was completely shocked when everyone showed up,” said Tom, referring to police cars that he said lined the block for a full day after Bejarano’s death.

The brothers told the Herald that they had seen her son, as well as the tenants, speaking to police, but had not yet seen her husband. Her family had lived in the house for about five years, they said.

According to an NCPD press release, police responded to the home after receiving a 911 call reporting an unconscious female. Bejarano was pronounced dead by emergency medical technicians.

“It could happen anywhere,” her neighbor Nick said of the suspected crime. “But when it happens next door, it’s a shock. One day you wake up and you find that the woman next to you has been murdered in a horrific way. It’s a little unsettling.”

Police ask anyone with information to call (800) 244-TIPS, or the NCPD Homicide Squad, at (516) 573-7788. All calls will remain anonymous.
